Overview

This window depicts the alchemical symbol for glass. The ascending “A” shape intersects with the descending “V” shape, and the two converging shapes form a diamond in the center. The word itself , “alchemy” derives from Arabic, and was used at a time when medieval craft was centuries away from developing into the science we call chemistry.

Alchemists would speak of transmuting “base metals into gold.” Alchemy had a spiritual side as well as a practical one. I take this as a metaphor of improving one’s skill in a craft or practice (physical or spiritual).

So progress can be imagined as a “climbing higher,” like the ascending “A”, as if one is transcending the material world. But we can also imagine progress as a deeper dive into the rich possibilities of matter, like the descending “V”.

Let me craft a window for you.

I’m Jim Stickney, and my studio is located just north of Berkeley. I enjoy working locally, although I am happy to ship my creations anywhere. Give me your ideas of what you’d like to see, and we’ll devise a workable pattern. Then choose your glass — I have a ton of it. No hyperbole — I have more then 2,000 pounds of beautiful stained glass pieces and sheets that span the visible spectrum.
